Entryway Design - Concrete Steps & Walls

See how to redesign an entryway to make it more open and colorful.

A video transcript featuring Ive Haugeland, Shades of Green Landscape Architecture

The entry to this house was really bland and it was almost hard to find, so we had to find a way to highlight it much more. The new front entrance is defined by a generous concrete stair, which is flanked by two straight concrete walls. The walls help terrace the slope and it also draws more attention to the entrance.

We regraded a little bit, and pushed the steps a little farther out, and made it into two flights instead of just one. To highlight everything, we used these yellow kangaroo paws that are really pretty, and they really make a statement. The main masses of plants here are the grasses, so that the kangaroo paws are kind of the highlight that brings it all up a notch.
