Play with SymmetryLocated in Spokane’s South Hill neighborhood, Manito Park features five gardens, a conservatory and a duck pond. It is most well-known for Duncan Gardens, which features a granite fountain and a large display of vibrant annual flowers. Modeled after gardens from the Renaissance-era, the design is completely symmetrical - the lovely garden is reflected across a central walking path like a mirror. This idea can be scaled down and used in a residential setting. Because of its formality, this type of garden pairs best with homes of a classical architectural-style.

Use Unexpected MaterialsAt the 2013 Spokane Home & Yard Show, this display garden created by Greenscape Landscaping was recognized as Overall Best in Show. Shown here is a creative arbor that marked the entrance to the garden. Corrugated metal pipe in two colors serves as the posts, while an arched piece of metal lattice supports vines and two pendant lights. This unique feature is a testament to using unexpected materials in the landscape and could easily be recreated at a local residence. The pipes used for this project were new, but you could do something similar with salvaged ones.

Lay Artistic PavingNext time you visit the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) in the Browne’s Addition neighborhood of Spokane, be sure to check out the paving that surrounds the building. Made up of a mixture of colored concrete, flagstone, pavers and other materials, the paving is just as artistic as the exhibits on display inside the museum. This idea can easily be replicated in private landscapes to give your garden an eclectic vibe. While you’re at the MAC you should also check out their outdoor amphitheater and see if they have any sculptures displayed on the grounds.
