Naturalistic Garden Tour
Tour an unconventional Pennsylvania garden featuring a pond and salvaged materials
This garden was designed to be viewed from the new deck attached to the owner's barn turned studio.
Sail cloths above the pond provide a canopy that protects the koi from too much sun.
A sandstone landing off the side of the home leads to the dining terrace which is composed of brick set in a herringbone pattern.

An arbor featuring a salvaged barn beam on top of two traditional columns marks the steps that approach the studio. The landing above the steps is detailed with a concentric pattern of brick.
Brick and flagstone steps lead through the arbor and toward the studio.
A small stream runs through the garden and into the koi pond. The stream was designed with soft shapes and edges to look as if it was part of a natural process.
A path made of multiple materials leads through the garden and crosses the stream. The use of multiple materials and shapes reinforces the unconventional look of the garden.
A large stone slab bridges the koi pond and divides it in two. Part of the pond is for the koi, while the other part is for a lotus garden. A similiar stone slab was used for the stream crossing.
The plants in this garden are constantly changing throughout the seasons. The designer primarily focused on the contrast among the shapes of the flowers and grasses, with color as a secondary concern.
Key plants in this garden: Deschampsia 'Goldtau', Lobelia cardinalis Cardinal Flower, Molinia 'Skyracer', Eupatorium maculatum 'Gateway', Thymus var. Creeping Thyme, Magnolia virginiana Sweetbay Magnolia.
