Solar Garden Fountains
Weigh the pros & cons of solar fountains
This garden fountain is powered by a solar panel that can be staked in the ground wherever it will get the most sunlight. Clark Street Home in St. Louis, MO.
Solar garden fountains are run off energy from the sun rather than electricity. Available in a variety of styles and finishes, many people love solar fountains for the following reasons:
- Eco-friendly
- No electrical cords
- Won't increase your electric bills
Smaller fountains may have the solar panels integrated directly into the unit, while larger ones have a remote panel that can be placed out in the yard. The second option makes it possible to place your fountain in a place with less-than-ideal sunlight and attach it to the panel which can be staked in an area the receives direct light.
However, solar fountains can also have a downside. Knowing the limits of solar fountains will help you decide if they are the right option for you:
- Won't work on cloudy or overcast days
- Can't be run at night
- Water flow is much weaker than with an electric pump
- Panel can be unattractive
Some solar fountain manufacturers are trying to solve the above problems by including a battery that when fully charged can operate the fountain when the sun is weak or even at night. Additionally, if you want a stronger water flow, you can select a fountain with a larger solar panel (however, this may look out of place in your garden).
When to say yes to solar power:
- When your fountain only requires bubbling or trickling water
- When you live in a sunny climate
- When you plan to enjoy your fountain mainly during the day
