Backyard Basketball Courts

See how to turn an existing concrete patio into a sports court

A video transcript featuring Scott Cohen, The Green Scene

You can turn any plain concrete patio into a sport court by using a rubberized textured coating. What we did here is coated this concrete slab with dark green and light green rubberized coating that's applied using trowels rather than paintbrushes. That gives the texture flexibility. It hides cracks in the concrete. We went back and striped it.

Court dimensionsThis is sized at about the minimum you would have in a backyard. It's about 22 feet deep by about 18 feet across. That gives you just enough room for the key and a free throw line. You want to make sure when you're sizing these patios for sports play that you leave enough room for the basketball hoop to be behind it and that you have vertical clearance above you. Also keep in mind where those balls are going to go when you shoot them. It's a lot of fun. It keeps the family entertained, and it's just one more element that you can add in your backyard and make for something special.
