Small Garden Planting Design

How to choose properly sized plants for small yards

By Maureen Gilmer, landscape designer, author and LandscapingNetwork.com columnist

Good design is all about getting the right plant in the right place. This is even more crucial in the small garden because plants must be sized to fit into limited areas. Their roots need to behave well. They must be intensely interesting. All of this creates new opportunities for those great little plants that get lost in larger landscapes. Encourage your designer to create lots of nooks and crannies where she can spot in little plants or create truly amazing small-scale compositions.
